About Rieteka Geursen

My art practice has its roots in drawing. Various elements of drawing, such as line, mass, gesture, colour, and shape, inform my process.

I became interested in focusing on drawing, and to a lesser degree sculpture, when completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Deakin University in Warrnambool, Victoria. Many things are embedded in my art practice from this time, including my keeping of a drawing journal. This not only records my progression of ideas, but has also become a valuable resource to resolve aesthetic issues as they arise. The study of sculpture has meant that extending the artwork beyond the two-dimensional is often inevitable.

My work is always figurative because it consistently  refers to what is around me. I draw plants wherever I go, and my kids whenever they’re so occupied that they’ve forgotten I’m there. Looking is what establishes my approach for each work. The selection of materials that convey what I’ve seen is then made, and the process of making begins.
